CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team will take on Newberry College on Friday at 5 p.m. in the semifinal round of the
South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Championship.
The Royals, seeded second, and the Wolves, seeded third, both finished the regular season with 4-2 records. However, Queens defeated Newberry in its final regular-season game of the year winning 2-1 at home.
Casey Carrigan scored the opening goal in the match while
Gabe Lechner scored the game-winner.
Lechner leads the Royals this season with 18 points on eight goals and two assists.
Jill Sherman has nine points on four goals and an assist, and
Maya Forbes and
Victoria Tredinnick each have six points on three goals. In goal,
Avian Thompson is 5-2 on the year with a .655 save percentage.
South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year Lily Drury leads the Wolves this season with 16 points on eight goals. Farai Kawonde and Caitlin Wassermann each have seven points on a pair of goals and three assists. In goal, Grace Lee is 5-2 with a .781 save percentage.
The Wolves advanced to the semifinal round after defeating Coker College, 2-1, at home. Queens advanced on a
6-0 home win over Mount Olive.
Friday's semifinal round will be played at Bessant Field. It will follow the first semifinal round game between Limestone and Coker which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Only individuals on the pass list will be permitted to enter the games. Fans on the pass list are encouraged to bring alternate seating to allow for social distancing.
