Jack McDowell Steps Down as Queens Head Baseball Coach

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Jack McDowell steps down as Queens University of Charlotte's head baseball coach, Queens director of athletics Cherie Swarthout announced today. McDowell was the first head coach chosen to lead the brand new program at Queens three years ago.

"I want to thank Coach McDowell for his tremendous commitment to starting the Queens baseball program," said Swarthout. "He has worked tirelessly the past three years and we are appreciative of those efforts."

After competing as a club team for one season, the Royals began competition in the NCAA and the South Atlantic Conference in the Spring of 2019. Queens saw Noah Jones recognized on the all-conference, all-region, and all-state teams that same season. Prior to the Royals' 2020 season coming to a close due to COVID-19, Queens was 4-5 in league play.

"Coach McDowell will always be the founding coach of the Queens baseball program and the legacy of his work will be seen for years and years to come," Swarthout added.

McDowell, also known as Black Jack, is a former Major League Baseball player who was drafted by the Chicago White Sox from Stanford University in 1987. After pitching seven seasons with the White Sox, he spent a season with the Yankees and two season with the Indians. McDowell then wrapped his career in 1999 after a two-year stint with the Angels.

Following his retirement, McDowell began giving private instruction in the sport, and managed the Ogden Raptors Advanced Rookie Team in Los Angeles and the Dodgers AZL Rookie Team.

McDowell played collegiately at Stanford University. As a Cardinal, he earned co-Freshman of the Year honors in 1985. In 1986 he was named to the all-American second team while he earned third-team honors in 1987after leading Stanford to the College World Series Championship. McDowell received his bachelor's degree from Stanford in communications in 1988.
