Box Score DAYTONA BEACH – An own goal with less four minutes remaining helped the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team to a 2-1 upset of No. 20 Barry University on the first day of the Embry-Riddle Invitational.
The Royals struck first, scoring the game's first goal in the 23
rd minute of action when freshman forward Nia Gather tallied her first career goal on assist from Phan. The score remained at 1-0 in favor of Queens through the halftime intermission.
After the break, Barry broke through in the 47
th minute of play as sophomore midfielder Ellen Cederin evened the score at 1-all with her first goal of the young season.
Queens and Barry remained in a deadlock for much of the second half until the Buccaneers made a crucial mistake, netting an own goal at the 85:28 mark to put the Royals ahead on the scoreboard. Freshman Keeper
Erica Turner turned away a penalty shot with under three minutes on the clock to preserve the upset.
In total, Barry outshot Queens 14-10 in the match but Turner collected four saves in her first collegiate save to register the win.
The Royals continue their Florida road trip on Monday when they take on tournament host Embry-Riddle University at 10 a.m.
