WILSON, N.C. – Both the Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's triathlon teams swept the podium at the Battle at Buckhorn this morning in their first Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Triathlon Conference (MACTC) race of the fall season Saturday.
Queens competed among five other teams in the race including: the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina Wilmington, George Washington University, and Georgetown University.
On the men's side, graduate-student
Alec Mundt led the Royals in first place (1:08:56), followed by sophomore
Austin Podhajsky in second (1:09:04), and freshman
Jack DeWeerdt in third (1:09:46).
Additionally, four more Royals finished in the top-10 including
Milan Tomin in fourth place (1:11:43),
Jake Baugher in fifth (1:12:32),
Miles Fowler in sixth (1:12:59), and Joachim Philipps in seventh (1:13:28).
Six more men also finished in the top-20, including
Nils Reckmeier in 11th (1:14:42),
Jared Eytcheson in 12th (1:15:19),
Hunter Janus in 14th (1:16:13),
Sean Zaidi in 16th (1:17:18),
Jack Kurtz in 18th (1:18:29), and
Sebastian Rivera Del Hierro in 20th (1:18:52).
On the women's side, freshman
Katharina Krosta took the number one spot finishing at 1:20:09, followed by senior
Sara Diaz-Restrepo in second (1:1:21:40), and junior
Caitlin Roper in third (1:22:31).
Senior
Allie Dominicali also finished in fourth place at 1:22:37 and
Colomba Nahum finished in fifth place at 1:24:31.
Also finishing in the top-20 was
Phelan Purnell in 10th (1:27:44),
Ida Osterman in 13th (1:29:55),
Caylan Bromley in 17th (1:33:01), and
Maddie Koler in 18th (1:33:10).
"Our first race of the year turned out to be a good opener for our title-defense season," head coach of triathlon
Sonni Dyer stated. "I am very impressed with how some freshman and new team members stepped up to deliver. We'll build on this one in next weekend's home race in Mooresville."
Next, both the Royals men and women will compete in the Tri-at-the-Trump race in Mooresville, North Carolina Sunday, October 6.
