DETROIT, Mich. – Former Queens University of Charlotte All-American
Todd Withers has signed a contact with the Detroit Pistons. Withers, a 2018 graduate of Queens, becomes the first former Queens player to sign a contract with an NBA team.
Withers recently completed the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League with the Pistons, averaging 10 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 57 percent from the 3-point line. The Pistons went 4-1, losing in the quarterfinals after advancing from pool play as the No. 2 overall seed with an unbeaten record (4-0).
Withers spent his rookie season with the Pistons G-League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive, where he made 49 appearances and 37 starts while playing 25.8 minutes per game. He averaged 6.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game, while shooting 40.5 percent from the field and finishing with the league's third-highest defensive rating.
In 2017-2018 as a senior at Queens, Withers was named an All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) becoming the first Royal to receive the honor since 2004. He led the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots, averaging 13.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. He was also named a first-team all-conference selection, a second-team all-region selection (D2CCCA) and an all-state selection (NCCSIA).
His performance helped propel Queens to its best season in program history. The 2017-2018 Royals went 32-4, compiling the program's best record, and won the Southeast Regional title to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2003. With a win in the national quarterfinals behind a 26-point, seven-rebound and five-assist performance from Withers, Queens made its second all-time appearance in the national semifinals tying for the deepest postseason run in program history.
In his four years with the Royals, Withers scored 1,356 points, ranking him seventh all-time at Queens, and collected 766 rebounds, good for third all-time. In 113 career appearances (third all-time) and 95 starts, Withers compiled 15 double-doubles and twice recorded a career-high of 29 points in a game.
"Todd has always been a special young man and a winner," said Royals head coach
Bart Lundy. "He was completely under-valued as a high school player and was on almost no state rankings you can find. Queens became his only scholarship offer. Todd turned not only the basketball program but the entire Queens community into his extended family. I don't know if I have ever coached a player who had more deep relationships on campus than Todd. From professors and classmates to his teammates and coaches, Todd was loved by everyone at Queens.
"For the Pistons, not only do they see a good player and a winner on the court but they see a person who will sacrifice for those around him and help in any way he can to the group. Congratulations Todd, we are so very proud of you."
