TEMPE, Ariz. - After being disqualified from the Mixed-Team Relay at the USA-Triathlon Club National Championships two weeks ago, in which the Queens University of Charlotte triathlon combined team originally won, the appeal's decision was overturned crowning Queens as the event's national champion, USA-Triathlon announced Monday afternoon.
"National champions," head coach of triathlon
Sonni Dyer stated. "The overall combined program title is "the" one that we've pursued since our program launched four years ago."
Queens was disqualified due to a protest following the end of the race by another team alleging that Queens violated uniform policies. The Royals' appeal was denied, but after a second appeal, heard by the USA-Triathlon Hearings and Appeals Committee, the disqualification was overturned.
"It simply wouldn't have been possible without the senior leadership of some very special Royals who have passionately cultivated our culture of we," Dyer commented. "And in this process we've now become the first Division II program to ever win a team title at USA Triathlon's Collegiate National Championships."
With the decision to reinstate the Royals' first-place finish in the Mixed-Team Relay, Queens earns the overall USAT Collegiate Club National Championship for the first time in program history. The Royals are the first DII program to ever win the overall title.
"Through any adversity, they never quit," Dyer concluded. "They simply raced for one another."
