NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team split a doubleheader on Monday evening, defeating the Wolves of Newberry College's JV squad 6-4 in game one followed by a 10-2 loss in game two at Smith Road Complex.
Game One: Queens 6, Newberry JV 4 (Seven inn.)
In the evening's first game, the Royals scored early with two runs in the first inning, following by another in the third. However, Newberry tallied four runs in the bottom half of the third inning to take a one-run lead.
The Royals responded with a two-run fifth inning to reclaim the advantage and added an insurance run in the sixth to complete the comeback.
Freshman
Drew Meschede (3-1) got the win for Queens after starting on the mound and allowing four runs on five hits with six strikeouts across four innings. Junior
Jack Bergren got his first save of the season after striking out two batters over three no-hit innings out of the bullpen.
Junior
CJ Hammonds provided the power for the Royals at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and his fourth home run of the season.
Freshman
Anthony Orta was also 2-for-4, while fellow freshman
Noah Jones was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Another junior,
Chase Hager, finished 1-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base.
Game Two: Newberry JV 10, Queens 2 (Seven inn.)
The Royals' offense went cold in the doubleheader finale as the Wolves' pitching staff held Queens to three hits.
In contrast, Newberry's came alive in the second contest, tallying 10 runs on 13 hits including nine extra-base knocks.
The Wolves built a 9-0 lead after four innings of action before Queens plated two runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI-double from Jones. A lone run from Newberry in the bottom half of the sixth made the score 10-2 as the Royals were held scoreless in the seventh and final frame.
Junior
Kollin Schrenk (1-2) suffered the loss on the mound, giving up seven on runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in two innings of work. Freshman
Adam Hartle tossed four innings of relief, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts in his team-leading ninth appearance of the year.
Jones turned in a 1-for-3 performance at the plate with a double and two RBI, while Hager and Orta had one hit each for Queens.
The Royals return to the diamond on Thursday, April 5, when they host Piedmont International University JV in the team's final home game of the season at Jack Hughes Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
