CHARLOTTE, N.C.– The 15th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte secured a share of its second consecutive South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship, picking up an 8-1 win over Carson-Newman University. The Royals also defeated Johnson C. Smith University 9-0 on Saturday night at the Queens Sports Complex.
The two wins helped Queens finish 11-3 overall, while the win over CNU gave the Royals a 9-1 conference record. Queens and Wingate University finished in a tie for first place atop the league standings, but a head-to-head win over the Bulldogs on March 31 gave the Royals an edge in a tiebreaker scenario.
"We are really proud of these guys. We've battled through so much adversity this season," said Head Coach
Billy Boykin. "This team has shown tremendous fight all year and some real nerve. They leave it all out on the court and they always stand by one another."
Queens will be the No. 1 overall seed in next week's South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Championship and will host No. 8 seed Coker College on Wednesday, April 18 in Charlotte.
The Royals also honored its two-member senior class in
Alvaro De La Osa and
Andor Vas in a pre-match ceremony. Vas' 34 career singles wins rank him in a tie for 7th overall in Queens history, while his 53 career wins in doubles play are third highest mark in the program.
"We've had amazing senior leadership this year. Andor and Alvaro have been a stabilizing force for our young group," Boykin continued. "They are both fantastic guys and genuinely care for the well-being of their teammates. They mean a great deal to our program and we wil miss both of them so much. We will miss their leadership."
