LAURINBURG, N.C.– The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team moved its win streak to three games in a row with 10-0 and 17-5 victories over St. Andrews University on Wednesday afternoon.
Game One: Queens 10, St. Andrews 0 (Six innings)
The Royals secured their third shutout of the season in the day's first game, as the contest ending after six innings of play due to NAIA 'mercy rules'.
Queens took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, extending its advantage to 5-0 following a three-run fourth inning. A single run in the fifth and four more in the top of the sixth coupled with a scoreless bottom half by the Knights ended the game early.
Junior
Kollin Schrenk (2-2) turned in his best performance of the season, allowing just one hit while striking out four batters across five innings of work. Freshman
Wes Boling toss a perfect sixth inning in relief to preserve the shutout.
At the plate, freshman
Noah Jones was 1-for-3 with three runs scored and his second home run of the season. Fellow freshman
Anthony Orta finished 2-for-4 with a double, while freshman
Austin Campbell was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Game Two: Queens 17, St. Andrews 5 (Seven innings)
The doubleheader final saw the Royals match their second-highest run total of the season on just 13 hits to go along with eight fielding errors by the Knights.
Both sides got on the scoreboard in the first inning with Queens building a 4-1 lead before St. Andrews closed the gap with a two-run third inning.
Queens added five runs in the fifth, as the Knights scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to conclude their scoring. The Royals exploded for eight runs in the top of the seventh and held St. Andrews scoreless in the home half to seal the victory.
Freshman
Drew Meschede (4-1) earned the win despite allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
Junior reliever
Max Fries allowed one run on one hit with three strikes in one inning out of the bullpen, while Boling made his second appearance of the day and ninth of the season to pitch a scoreless seventh inning and record a strikeout.
Orta was 3-for-5 on offense with two runs scored and four RBI, while Jones registered a 2-for-5 performance with a double and a triple. Campbell was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, as sophomore
Dominic Ford was also 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
The Royals' club season come to close tomorrow when the team takes on Belmont Abbey College JV in a doubleheader in Belmont, N.C. beginning at 3 p.m.
