NEWTON, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team suffered a pair of 3-1 losses on Wednesday afternoon to the Red Hawks of Catawba Valley Community College at Henkel-Alley Field.
Game One: Catawba Valley CC 3, Queens 1
Catawba Valley opened the day with an RBI-single in the first inning of game one before Queens quickly responded with a run of its own in the second.
Freshman
Anthony Orta led off the inning with a walk and stole second before advancing to third on a
Noah Jones' single. Orta then scored from third on a groundout from fellow freshman Anthony Douglas to tie the game at 1-all.
A two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth put the Red Hawks ahead by two runs as Queens loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but a double play ended the game and stopped the Royals' rally.
Junior
Jack Bergren (3-3) was hit with the loss after allowed three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts across five innings on the mound. Freshman
Christian Huggins tossed a perfect sixth inning, striking out one batter.
Jones was 2-for-2 at the plate with a stolen base, while junior
CJ Hammonds was 2-for-3 with a stolen base of his own.
Game Two: Catawba Valley CC 3, Queens 1
In the doubleheader finale, both sides were scoreless through three innings of play before the Red Hawks tallied three runs in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run home run.
The Royals' lone run of the contest came in the top of the fifth as freshman
Wes Boling hit a solo home run, his second of the season.
Sophomore
Lee Harrison (0-1) got his first start of the year and allowed three runs on just three hits with two strikeouts over five innings, while junior
Max Fries allowed just one hit with two strikeouts in one inning of relief.
Orta was 2-for-3 in the game, while Boling was 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Junior
Ryan Dudney finished 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks and a stolen base.
Queens concludes its six-game road trip on Monday, April 2, with a trip to Newberry, S.C. to face the Newberry College Wolves in a doubleheader scheduled for 4 p.m.
