Baseball Concludes 10-Game Road Trip with Sweep of Erskine JV

DUE WEST, S.C. – A 10-game road trip ended on Tuesday evening for the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team as the Royals took both games of a doubleheader with Erskine College JV to extend its current winning streak to three games.

The Royals (14-4) won the first game of the day by an 11-run margin, pounding out 15 hits while also drawing nine walks. In game two, Queens won a contest that was shortened due to pending darkness, scoring 11 runs on 11 hits with six stolen bases and four Erskine fielding errors.

Game One: Queens 17, Erskine JV 6 (7 inn.)

Erskine got the first run of the day in the opening inning before Queens tallied six runs in the top half of the second. Another six-run inning in the top of the fourth followed by a single run in the fifth had the Royals ahead 11-1.

The Flying Fleet were able to bring five runs across the plate in the home half of the sixth, but Queens added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

Five Royals had multiple hits in the contest, led by freshman Noah Jones' 3-for-4 performance. Jones registered a double, two runs scored and four RBI at the plate.

Freshman Austin Campbell was also 3-for-4, totaling two runs scored and an RBI, while fellow freshman Anthony Orta was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, one RBI, one walk and a stolen base. Freshman Aaron Douglas chipped in two hits and three RBI, as sophomore Dominic Ford and junior CJ Hammonds had two RBI each.

Junior left-hander Jack Bergren (3-2) collected his third win of the year after tossing four innings, allowing just one run on six hits with four strikeouts.

Junior Max Fries allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits with a strikeout in one inning of relief, while freshman Jojo Castronovo tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen. Freshman Wes Boling also registered a scoreless inning of work, allowing just one hit in the final inning of the game.

Game Two: Queens 11, Erskine JV 3 (6 inn.)

In the second game on the doubleheader, Queens held a 3-2 lead after just two innings of play. The Royals' lead was pushed to a 7-2 margin after a four-run fourth inning, as Erskine tallied a run in the fifth to cut into the deficit.

Queens brought home four more runs in the top of the sixth and held Erskine scoreless in the bottom half of the frame before the game was called early due to darkness.

Douglas, Ford, Orta and junior Chase Hager each registered two RBI and a stolen base in the contest, as Ford and Orta recorded one double a piece and Hager supplied his first triple of the season. Campbell finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI of his own and two stolen bases.

Junior  Kollin Schrenk (1-0) picked up his first win after receiving a no-decision in his previous four starts. The right-hander gave up just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts over four innings on the mound. Sophomore Lee Harrison allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts across two innings in his first appearance of the season.

Queens returns home to host Prolific-Postgrad Academy on Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m at Jack Hughes Park in Pineville, N.C.
