CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's rugby teams dominated in their first home matches in Queens history today at the Sports Complex, defeating Lander University's teams. The women won big with a score of 132-0, and the men won 94-0.
Bridget Mielke had a great game to lead the Royals in the win recording four tries and nine conversions.
Abby Tobias added four tries of her own along with two conversions.
Ella Brucker,
Kelsey Lambert,
Abby Berberich and
Mary-Kate Lynch each recorded two tries. Also scoring for the Royals was Mikayla Tatum,
Kea Pittman,
Maddy d'Oliveira,
Asiah Peterson, and
Paige Hughes with one try each.
The men were led by
Marshall Frank tallying three tries in the match.
Mitch MacCartney and
Lebo Ngwenya were right behind Frank recording two tries each.
Benjamin Clipstone,
John Monroe,
Jacob Marin,
Anthony Toineeta,
Xavier Perry,
Stanton Johnson,
Jharid Morrison, and
Rylee Ellsworth also recorded one try each. Monroe and Johnson added two conversions each as well.
Tobias will go down in history as the first to score a try on Dickson Field for the women, while Frank was the first to score a try on the men's side.
At the half of today's women's game Naya Tapper, a member of the USA Rugby Women's World Cup team and Charlotte native, was honored for all she has done to advance the sport. John Downey, Queens' dean of students and Dr. Pamela Davies, Queens' president, were both honored at halftime of the men's game for their continued support of Queens Athletics and rugby.
The Royals teams will travel to Cleveland, Tennessee to take on Lee University next Saturday, with the men starting at 10 a.m. and the women to follow at 12 p.m.
