HARTSVILLE, S.C. – With a commanding 8-1 victory at Coker College, Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis has clinched a share of its first ever South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship.
QU (12-1, 10-0) remained undefeated in league play with today's conference championship clinching victory at Coker (8-11, 2-8). Only a victory at Carson-Newman University on April 14 separates the Royals from an outright SAC Championship.
"Coker is a tough team," said head coach
Billy Boykin. "They really pushed us in the conference tournament last season, so we knew that we'd be in for a tough match. I think that the guys were prepared mentally, and that they played a solid overall match today."
The Royals got off to a strong start as both the No. 1 team of
Paolo Bompieri and
Andor Vas and the No. 2 team of
Agustin Aran Martin and
Sebastian Meum grinded out 8-4 and 8-5 victories, respectively.
With two doubles points in hand, Queens then laid the hammer down as they swept through singles action.
Andor Vas shutout CC's Simon Bergborn at the No. 4 flight, and
Jules Athalis made his return with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1.
Agustin Aran Martin won at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2, and
Paolo Bompieri dispatched Henrik Hellbe by the identical scores of 6-3, 6-3.
Queens rounded out the sweep in singles play with No. 5
Zachary Williams winning 8-3 and No. 6
Joel Dunlap prevailing 8-1 in pro sets.
The Royals return to action on Wednesday, April 12 as they welcome in North Carolina A&T State University to Freedom Park. QU will then look to claim the SAC Championship outright on Friday, April 14 at Carson-Newman.
