Men's Tennis Blows Past Newberry to Advance to SAC Championship Match

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte is South Atlantic Conference Championship bound after they defeated fifth-seeded Newberry College, 5-1, in the semifinal round of the 2017 SAC Men's Tennis Tournament at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.

Already the conference regular season champions, the Royals (15-1) will look to make it a clean sweep of the SAC Championships as they go for the tournament title tomorrow, Saturday, April 22 against No. 2-seed Wingate University.

Queens' march to the championship match got off to a tremendous start as they took all three points from the Wolves (17-7) in doubles competition.

In a battle of All-Conference doubles selections, the QU No.1 team of Paolo Bompieri and Andor Vas were the first to finish as they dismissed the NC duo of Edison Ambarzumjan and Jordan Monosky, 8-4. The Royals then held off stiff challenges at the second and third doubles flights to take both points by the final of 8-6.

The Wolves didn't go down scoreless though as Ambarzumjan put his team on the scoreboard with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the top singles contest.

While Newberry looked poised to win the No. 4 match and had the No. 5 contest in a third set, Queens got victories from All-Conference honorees Paolo Bompieri and Agustin Aran Martin at the second and third spots, respectively, to end the match early, 5-1.

First, Aran Martin defeated NC's Nikhil Mannepalli 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Then, SAC Freshman of the Year, Paolo Bompieri slammed the door with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Jordan Monosky to send the Royals to championship Saturday.

The SAC Tournament Championship now comes down to the top-two teams in the regular season as top-seeded Queens will play Wingate at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. The Royals defeated the Bulldogs in Wingate, 5-4, earlier this season in the match that ultimately decided the SAC Championship.
