JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – CHAMPIONS! Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis captured its first ever South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship with a commanding 8-1 victory at Carson-Newman University on Friday, April 14.
Queens (14-1, 11-0) is the outright SAC Champion as they complete the regular season unblemished in league play. The Royals will now face the winner of the No. 4 Anderson vs. No. 5 Newberry quarterfinal match next Friday.
While the final team score showed a dominant team victory for Queens, inside the box score showed a much closer match.
The closeness of the match showed up early as the Royals eked by in doubles play. While the No. 1 team of
Paolo Bompieri and
Andor Vas cruised, Carson-Newman took the second match 8-6 and QU's No. 3 team of
Jules Athalis and
Joel Dunlap grinded out an 8-5 victory.
After Augustin Aran Martin's rout at No. 3 singles,
Jules Athalis and
Paolo Bompieri got everything they could handle in the top two singles contests. First, Athalis barely held off C-N's Joao Pedo Oliveria at the top flight, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Bompieri got a similar fight from Rodolpho Scharz as he defeated him in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
The three-set thriller trend continued in the No. 4 match as
Andor Vas was able to keep Stefano Daza at bay, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
The Royals finally got a bit of reprieve in the final two singles contests as
Sebastian Meum won 6-1, 7-6 and Zach Williams scored a 6-2, 6-3 win to close out the victory.
