Men’s Tennis Faces Mount Olive in First Round of NCAA Tournament

Savannah, Ga.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team (14-3) will face the University of Mount Olive (15-5) in the 2016 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tennis Tournament on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Armstrong State University. The match, scheduled to begin at 12 p.m., will serve as the first time that the men's tennis team has clinched a playoff berth since the 2011 season in addition to being the first time that the two programs have met since 2013.

The Royals managed to place as the eighth seed in the tournament for a slight edge over the ninth seeded Trojans. Mount Olive is currently 15-5 going into the tournament and claiming the automatic qualifier as the winners of the Conference Carolinas' trophy for the third straight year. The Royals ended their regular season with a satisfying 14-3 record, and were able to top-off their success by winning an automatic bid as South Atlantic Conference champions.

In the 2013 matchup, Mount Olive walked away with a narrow 5-4 win to take the regular season victory. This was the last year Queens participated in Conference Carolinas and the two teams have not faced off since the Royals switch to the SAC.

Queens entered this year's SAC Championships as the third seed, seated behind Tusculum and Wingate who handed the Royals their only conference losses during the season. Queens found a 5-3 win over Coker to earn their rematch with Wingate in the semifinal round, topping the Bulldogs with a dominate 5-1 performance. In the finals, Queens battled Newberry in a match that came down the last court. The Royals found their win in a tiebreak with Giovanni Setti taking the deciding point for a 5-4 victory.

With a three-game-clinch in their title run, Mount Olive defeated Belmont Abbey and Barton with 5-1 scores to find their way into the finals match against Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer would hold a 2-1 lead coming out of paired play but the Trojans walked away with the 5-4 score to claim the hardware.

The match is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 7. More information on the Southeast Regional Tournament can be found here.
