Men’s Basketball Defeats Armstrong State on Last Second Shot

Box Score St. Augustine, Fla. The Queens University of Charlotte Men's Basketball team went to 2-0 on the season as they defeated Armstrong State 83-82 on an exciting last second layup by Rob Lewis on Sunday, November 15, 2015.
 
Rob Lewis would lead all scorers with 22 points from the field on 10-18 shooting; he also added five assists and four rebounds on the night. Todd Withers was a spark for the Royals on offense as he went 4-for-5 from three-point range and scoring 15 points in the game. Kendall Jones added nine points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals in a winning effort.
 
Queens shot 55 percent from the field including eight three pointers in the game. The Royals would tally nine steals, 14 fast-break points, and out rebound the Pirates 31-26.
 
Armstrong State would come out strong in the first half, taking a 14-7 lead with 14 minutes remaining as Kyle Callanan drained his first three-pointer of the game. The Royals would battle back and close the gap to two points (18-16) after a jumper from Lewis followed by a quick three from Todd Withers. Armstrong State would continue to hold the lead as both teams would continue to fight back and forth in the first half until a breakaway dunk by Daniel Camps would give the Royals their first lead (30-29) since the early minutes of the first half. A Kendall Jones layup with three seconds left in the first quarter would give the Royals a 37-36 lead at the half.
 
Both teams came out of the half with hot shooting as three-pointers were flying from both teams. Armstrong State's Nicholas Scott would make three treys in the first four minutes of the second half and Queens' Lewis and Withers would make three-pointers of their own, with Withers three pointer tying the game at 52-52 with 15:54 remaining in the game. Neither team would take a lead of larger than four midway through the second half. The Royals took a 69-66 lead with 8:06 remaining after a Kendall Jones steal and fast break layup. The Pirates would follow this up with a 10-0 run that would extend until the 4:08 minute mark in the second half that would take them to a 76-69 lead. Queens would go on a run of their own (10-4) to bring the lead within one point with 1:55 remaining in the game after a Rob Lewis jumper. The Royals would have the ball down 82-81 with 10 seconds left to go as Lewis would take the inbounds pass, spin move into the lane and make his layup to put Queens in the lead 83-82 with 1.9 seconds remaining. Armstrong State would attempt to score at the end of the game, but it was stolen to seal the victory for the Royals.
 
Armstrong State was led by Herbert Graham who scored 16 points in the game. He was followed by Shaquiell Mitchell who scored 15 for the Pirates.
 
The Royals return to action on Saturday, November 21st as they play host to the University of North Georgia at 4:00 pm in the Levine Center.
