Box Score 2 Jefferson City, Tenn. – Battling through two matches, the Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team suffered a loss to top-of-conference, Carson-Newman, with a 3-1 score before facing Columbus State for a 3-2 Cougar score. Carson-Newman took the match 25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 25-18 to move to a 20-3 overall record and a 14-1 South Atlantic Conference record. Columbus State forced a five set win to go 19-25, 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 16-14 to move to a 3-19 overall record. Queens would conclude the day with a 8-13 overall record and a 6-9 SAC record.
Sydney Kunz would take a career high of eight services aces in the team's match against Columbus State as the team secured a season high 18 total service aces.
Starting the day against a strong Carson-Newman team, Queens struggled through the first set as the Eagles hit a .387 for the set.
The Eagles would take the second set as well, but not without some pressure from Queens. The Royals hit for a .318 with 11 kills and four errors to fall just shy of the Eagles who took 16 kills and five errors for a .344 hitting percentage. Carson-Newman took the last three points to take the game after a 22-22 tie.
Looking to stay in the game, Queens came out early against the Eagles starting with a 4-0 run to claim a 13-7 lead. The team would only build from their eventually extending their lead to an 18-10 score. The team would close the set with a 25-22 score with
Meredith Jones taking the kill.
The fourth set saw momentum shift back to the home team as Queens called timeout after falling behind 10-5. The Royals would be unable to control Carson-Newman who forced the Royals to burn their second timeout at 18-10. They went on to claim the match.
Jessica Raines led the team with 16 kills. M. Jones took 10 kills and three service aces while
Taylor Henry put up six blocks.
The Eagles were led by Molly Lock who found 16 kills to lead the team. Megan Morris had three services aces while Anna Patton took 35 assists.
The Royals brought energy into their match against the Cougars hitting a .345 for the first set to take the win 25-19, with M. Jones taking a pair of kills towards the end.
Columbus State took the next two sets, firing off 14 kills in the second set and 16 kills in the third. The Cougars would hit a .556 in the third set of the match.
The fourth set did see Queens take a lead halfway through the game. However, the Cougars managed to come back to take control at 21-21.
Sydney Kunz took three service aces to end the set and even the match a two sets apiece.
Both team fought through the deciding set meeting at 14-14 after a kill from
Elizabeth Bialkowski. Two kills from the Cougars gave the team the win.
In addition to Kunz's record night for service aces, she grabbed 26 assists. M. Jones took 13 kills, 12 digs, and two service aces.
Megan Mancini rounded out the stats with 15 digs and four services.
The team will return home next Tuesday as they host Catawba College. Queens will take the floor at Curry Arena inside the Levine Center at 7 p.m.
