Box Score Mars Hill, N.C. - Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball (3-8, 1-5 SAC) came out victorious against Mars Hill University (4-7, 2-4 SAC) on Saturday, January 3, 2015, taking the game 66-53 for their first conference win of the season. Both
Lacey Singletary and
Carmen Richardson garnered season highs as they took 22 points apiece in the game.
The game against the Lions tied the season high of for points in a single-game equaling the Claflin matchup on December 20, 2014. The team would also tie their single-game assists with 8, as
Karleasha Thompson sat atop the category with eight for the game. Queens made 27 field goals (season high) as they found and maintained control of the game half way through the first half.
Although Queens struck first, an 11-0 run put the Royals in a hole early in the game. Mars Hill held control extending out into a 10 point lead with 10 minutes left in the half to go up 17-7. Singletary broke the ice with a layup to start the Royals on a run of their own. It would take Mars Hill over five minutes to find a basket as Queens marched out into a 19-17 lead with 4:24 on the clock. Both teams found points as the clocked ticked down, but the Royals would have the upper hand heading into half with a 32-29 lead.
Even though the start of the second was narrow for Queens, the team held the lead for the whole 20 minutes never giving way for a tie. Richardson found four back-to-back baskets aiding the Royals in their quest for the game. However, Queens was unable to truly gain ground until Thompson took eight consecutive points herself to bring the Royals into a 59-49 lead with 3:03 to play. Singletary gave the team their largest lead of 15 as she converted the three-point play with 1:31 on the clock, but Genice Lane found one last basket for the Lions before time expired. The Royals left the floor with a 13 point victory over Mars Hill of 66-53.
Singletary would also add four blocks to her night as three of them came on back-to-back attempts from Mars Hill.
McKell Oliverio and Thompson would both reach double-digits in the game as they equaled at 10 points.
Abby Pettit found a career high of 12 rebounds against the Lions to partner with two steals.
Mars Hill had three players reach into double-digits for the game as Lane took the lead with 12 points. Paige Chavis and Camile Glymph follow closely behind as both found 10 points of their own to add to the Lion's score. Glymph would also have five steals in the game to lead the floor as Chavis tallied three steals of her own.
Queens will face a 6-6 (2-4 SAC) Coker College team next Wednesday at home as the Royals look to continue their two game winning streak.
