Bulldogs give Queens first losses of the season

WINGATE, N.C. - The Queens tennis program travelled to Wingate to face the Bulldogs in their third SAC match of the year. Both the men and women's matches started off neck-and-neck, but ultimately the Bulldogs pulled out a 6-3 victory on the women's side and a 7-2 win on the men's.

Women's match

The Royals women started out strong and gained a 2-1 advantage over the number 29 team in the nation after doubles play. Picking up key victories for the Royals were Christina Rustscheff and Melissa Laing by the score of 8-3, and Jaclyn Rock and Claire Hamilton by the score of 8-4.

Unfortunately the Royals were not able to capture that momentum and faced a reinvigorated home side that only allowed the Royals to pick up one victory in singles. Earning that win was freshman sensation Laing who won in straight sets by the score of 7-6, 6-3.

The Royals are now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in SAC play. The women play this Friday at Converse at 3:00 p.m.

Men's match

Facing a tough opponent the Royals found themselves in a battle from the opening serve. With three intense matches going on the Royals fought for every point, but were only able to come up with one victory by Ignacio Casali and Lucas Okita by the score of 8-5.

The top 50 in the country Bulldogs looked strong in the singles portion of the match, with the ever steady Andre Bafume being the only Royals able to earn a victory for the visitors by the score of 7-6, 6-3.

Queens is now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in SAC play. The men play next on March 15 when they travel to Methodist University.
