Queens picks up road win over Eagles

Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Queens University of Charlotte (6-18) ended their 11-game losing streak this afternoon with a 69-64 road win over Carson-Newman College (14-12). The win completes the home-and-home sweep over the Eagles this season and improves the Royals' South Atlantic Conference record to 5-15. The Eagles now sit at 11-9 in the league.
 
Senior forward Shonice Pettaway led the Royals in scoring with 18 points, while also totaling five rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks. Sophomore guard Nikia Squire recorded 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Sophomore guard Micha Cox added 11 points and 5 assists, while junior forward Lacey Singletary scored 10 points.
 
Queens shot 60.87 percent from the floor and 40 percent from the three in the opening half of action. After Singletary scored the first bucket of the game at 19:34, the Royals never trailed the Eagles in the period. They would see their largest lead at 6:57 following a fastbreak lay-in from Squire. At the break, Queens held a 36-32 lead.
 
The Eagles quickly tied the game up twice three minutes into the second half before three straight layups put the Royals ahead by six. They would hold on to the narrow lead until midway through the half when a 10-0 run by Carson-Newman put the Eagles on top for the first time, 50-46.
 
Queens trailed the Eagles until Squire scored a fastbreak bucket to tie the game at 57-57 with 4:55 to play. Squire's score started a six-point burst for Queens that put them back ahead, 61-57. The Royals then shot 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final 1:30 to seal the victory.
 
Lashawnda Peacher led Carson-Newman today with 21 points and nine rebounds.
 
Queens is back at home on Wednesday night against Catawba College at 6 p.m.
