Paulus leads Royals in loss to No. 3 Limestone

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Freshman attacker Abigail Paulus led the Royals this afternoon with six points as they fell 13-11 to No. 3 Limestone College at Dickson Field. The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team now sits at 1-1 on the season, while the Saints improve to 2-0.
 
Paulus scored four goals and tallied two assists to lead all players on the field. Sophomore attacker Maggie Masters added two goals, while junior attacker Jena Ready recorded one goal and three assists. Masters also led in draw controls, recording five in the game.
 
After entering the halftime break tied 5-5 with the Saints, the Royals quickly fell behind following a 4-0 push by Limestone at the start of the second. Queens' Kelly Dowd ended the drought for the Royals at 17:13 finding the back of the net after receiving a pass from Paulus. With the score sitting at 9-6 in Limestone's favor, Paulus then scored back-to-back goals within a 1:30 to bring the Royals to within one, 9-8, of the Saints with 12:10 to play.
 
At 8:47 Limestone's Sarah Oor put her team ahead 11-9, but Queens' Megan Wagner had an answer 39 seconds later to cut their lead to one again. The Saints would then score two straight, increasing their lead to three, 13-10, with 3:36 left in regulation.
 
A free-position-shot fired into the back of the net from Queens' Paulus at 3:11 would be the final goal of the game for the Royals with time on Limestone's side.
 
In the opening half, the Royals found themselves holding a 3-2 lead with 13:26 on the clock after scoring three consecutive goals. Limestone would come alive to score two in a row and reclaim the lead at 7:45, but Masters of Queens soon tied things back up with a goal at 7:12. Each team would score once more before the break.
 
Queens won the draw control battle today 14-12, but lost the battle for ground balls 17-11. Limestone edged the Royals in shots 28-24 after the Royals outshot the Saints 13-12 in the first half. Queens totaled 16 turnovers in the game to Limestone's 11 despite both teams having eight at the half.
 
Taking the loss in goal for Queens was Danielle Horoschak who totaled 10 saves. Limestone's Sydney Teeter collected seven saves in her win in the cage.
 
Jessica Aguanno led the Saints offense with three goals, while Oor recorded five points on four assists and one goal. Carleigh Davis notched four points on two goals and two assists.
 
Queens is back at Dickson Field on Friday against the University of Tampa at 6 p.m.
