Box Score Salisbury, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte volleyball (6-23, 3-17 SAC) traveled to the Catawba College (7-20, 5-16 SAC) on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, for their last road match of the year as they succumbed in three sets to the Indians going 25-15, 25-18, 25-18.
Elizabeth Bialkowski led the offensive charge, grabbing nine kills for the match.
Katie Schoenrock and
Meredith Jones would aid Bialkowski with six kills apiece. Queens had five total blocks come out of the match with
Alex Thompson taking part in two and tallying a solo. Three Royals would add aces onto the board as Thompson,
Sydney Kunz, and
Rebecca Cochran provided unanswerable serves.
Megan Mancini took 14 digs, the most in the match for either team.
Catawba found Ashley Brown for their offensive attack as she tallied nine kills for the night. The Indians had 12 service aces for the match with Erin Morant, McKenzie Garrison, Rachel Stanford, Meredith Furr, and Caitlin Turner each grabbed two aces apiece. Stanford would also lead the team in assists tallying 19.
A slow start to the match would see Catawba take an early 5-0 lead. A timeout gave Bialkowski the opportunity to put the Royals on the board as she drove one across the net. Her kill launched the team into a 6-5 match with Kunz and Cochran grabbing aces and Schoenrock throwing down an attack. Miscues, however, left the Royals using another timeout trailing 11-5. Queens would once again take the point from break with Jones making her statement and
Jessica Raines following it up (11-7). The moment would be short lived as the Indians took a seven point lead at 18-11. Cochran tallied three of the last four points for the Royals as the Indians capped the set 25-15.
It would again be an early run for Catawba seeking an 8-1 start with the Royals' sole point offered by Schoenrock. Unable to gain momentum, Catawba soon found a 14-5 gap in the game with the Royals looking for answers. Schoenrock again provided a response hitting one to the floor to break the Indian's run (14-6). Bialkowski would take advantage grabbing a block and four kills to put her team down 16-11. Bialkowski's dominating run forced Catawba to call timeout. Queens continued to hang on with Jones getting taking part in the action, but 19-15 was the closest the team would be able to come. Queens would fall in Set 2, 25-18.
Queens found means to stop Catawba early in Set 3 as Bialkowski put a point on the board stopping a 3-0 Indian run but only temporarily. Forced to use a timeout, the Royals soon found themselves trailing 9-3 after Evan Schultz put up an ace. Finding a slow climb, Schoenrock took a pair of kills to add to Thompson's ace to bring Queens to a 14-8 Catawba lead. The Royals would be able to pull within three at 16-13 with help from a
Katrina Kirby kill, but the Indians held control to cap the set at 25-18.
The Royals will be back in action this Friday as they host Lenoir-Rhyne for the last home weekend of the year.
