Royals season closes with overtime loss in SAC Championships

Box Score WINGATE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team closed their season this evening, bowing out of the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Championships following a 1-0 overtime loss to Wingate University. The Royals end their season at 8-9-2, while the Bulldogs advance to the semifinal round with a record of 11-2-3.

"I'm so proud of the team this year and the seniors that have led their team to four conference tournament experiences," said Queens head coach Katie Talbert. "The SAC is a prestigious and competitive conference and our team got better every game and peaked at the end. Although we are sad to be done playing, we are all excited for the future and proud to represent Queens this 2014 season."

After closing the regular season with a tightly contested match against conference leading Lenoir-Rhyne, the seventh seeded Royals entered tonight's game with all the confidence needed to give the second seeded Bulldogs a run for their money.

The first half would be closely matched with Wingate taking eight shots compared to Queens' six. Queens' Caitlyn Rodrigues put the ball on frame three times in the half with each shot being turned away by Wingate goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie. Neither team was able to find the back of the net as temperatures dropped, giving the quarterfinal match a 0-0 score at the break.

The Royals had to turn up their defensive pressure, swarming the Bulldogs on each of their offensive possessions in the second half. Though facing 18 shots from Wingate in the period, Queens was able to hold the Bulldogs scoreless through the end of regulation. Goalkeeper Tori Danchak recorded nine saves in the half.

Wingate didn't waste any time in the extra period, firing shot after shot at Danchak. Queens' keeper would make three consecutive saves before Wingate's Brooke Howell, the second leading goal scorer in the SAC, was able to score the golden goal in the 92nd minute of action. A double assist was awarded on the play to Kaitlyn Fletcher and Mackenzie Cherniuk, who took the corner kick.

Danchak finished the game with a season-high 15 saves.
