Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Queens University of Charlotte volleyball would fall in four sets to the Indians of Catawba on Tuesday, October 7, 2014.
Sydney Kunz would take a double-double for the match with 38 assists and 12 digs, her fourth of the season.
Meredith Jones and
Katie Schoenrock would come together for an electrifying offensive duo. Jones would put up 12 kills in the match to lead the team in the four sets against the Indians. Schoenrock would have 10 kills in contribution to her three aces (career high) and her three blocks.
Megan Mancini would take to the floor grabbing 22 digs, setting a new career high as she lead the team and kept the Royals in-play.
Jessica Raines would tie her season high of 9 kills during the match. She would also put up two blocks for the Royals.
The Royals would hit a .169 for the night taking 50 kills as a team. The young squad would keep several attacks from seeing the floor as the team covered 56 digs collectively and 13 blocks. Although the Royals would have five stunning aces during play, the team would give 18 points to Catawba off of serving errors.
Alex Hopper would lead the Indian offense as she took hold of 12 kills in the Catawba win. Meredith Furr tallied 16 assists for the night and was followed closely by Kaytee Frabotta who trailed by one (15 assists). Ashley Brown would take care of the net with 5 blocks to lead the Indians in the category while McKenzie Garrison covered the floor with 15 digs.
The match started with a closely battled first set that saw nine tying points. Catawba would take the first run with a slight 9-7 lead as Alex Hopper took hold of two back-to-back kills. Thompson would help to guide the team through a come-back charge to tie the match 12-12. Thompson would have two kills for the Royals in that tying push. Queens would eventually gain the upper hand heading into the fleeting moments of the first set, taking an 20-18 push as Mancini served an unwavering ball. A quick timeout for Catawba would rattle the Royals side leading to a pair of errors and transfer of the lead to the Indians (22-21). Queens would be able to hold Catawba at match point as
Elizabeth Bialkowski fired one off but the team would eventually fall 25-23 to the Indians.
Fired up after the first set, the two teams swapped points as both fired off rockets onto the opposing court. With the game staying even through 3-3, the Indians would lean on Erin Morant as she took a kill and a block to put Catawba up 5-3. A couple of errors would force the Royals to take an 8-5 timeout as Kaytee Frabotta, who would have three total aces for the night, served an untouchable ball across the net. Catawba would start to pull away winning a couple of long rallying points before
Rebecca Cochran would put a stop to the run with a placed shot to the middle of the court to bring about 15-10. The Indians, however, would bounce back and take the next three.
Meredith Jones would bury a second attempt as her shot deflected off Morant and came back into Queens's territory. Jones would follow it two plays later with a decisive hit to bring the game to 19-13. Queens would again make a run towards the end of the set but ran out of time as the Indians capped it at 25-17.
It would be an inspired Royals squad that came out to start the third set. Schoenrock and Thompson would build the team momentum taking an early block against the Indians (3-1). Schoenrock would then grab an ace to extend the Royals lead 6-3. Catawba would be force to take a timeout after two errors extended Queens out to 8-3 lead, but Jones would push one over the net as the teams step back out onto the court (9-3). The Royals would continue their success building into a 17-11 lead with the shot coming from Thompson. Catawba would manage three back-to-back points but would be unable to hold momentum. Jones would get in another unstoppable shot as she forced one to the back line to put the Royals at 20-15. A timeout call would pause the game at 22-17, but the Royals would continue their drive capping the match 25-19.
It would be a 6-2 start for the Indians in the fourth set that lead to an early Queens's timeout. Catawba would take 3-0 run before Queens could put another point on the board as the Royals trailed 9-3. As Queens pulled within one, Catawba took a timeout in hopes of refocusing and maintaining their lead (10-9), but an error would lead to a tied 10-10 game. Queens launch out into a 14-11 gap with Schoenrock taking two aces in contribution to a Thompson and Kunz block. Catawba would close the gap overtaking the Royals at 21-21 before eventually causing a Queens 23-22 timeout. Queens would take the tying point coming out of the break as Jones forced one down to the court. The two teams would see a 24-24 tie from Jones before the Indians took the set 26-24.
The Royals will travel on Friday, October 10, to Lenoir-Rhyne before making their way to Brevard that following day.
