Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Queens University of Charlotte volleyball (6-20 3-14 SAC) loses a pair on Saturday, October 25, 2014 as they battled the Lions of Mars Hill University (8-16, 7-10) and the Patriots from Francis Marion University (8-15, 4-9 PBC). Queens would have a strong go at both programs but would come up shy as Mars Hill would take the match 26-24, 28-26, 27-25 before going 18-25, 26-24, 25-13, 25-22 to Francis Marion.
Sydney Kunz would have her seventh double-double for the season against Mars Hill aiding the Royals with 34 assists and lunging after 11 digs.
Rebecca Cochran would tie her season high of 12 digs against Mars Hill before grabbing eight more against the Patriots. The young freshman would also lead the Royals tallying nine kills for the Lions match and adding to her already impressive serving record with three more aces. Against Francis Marion Cochran would have ten kills and assist with two blocks.
Alex Thompson would grab six aces today evenly distributing three per match.
Elizabeth Bialkowski would have 16 total kills for the day, nine coming against the Lions.
The team would continue to improve on defense taking 79 digs against Mars Hill. In addition, they would grab nine total blocks the second highest of the year behind the Coker College match on October 21 which had 11. Against Francis Marion, the Royals found 39 kills to add to an impressive nine unmanageable service aces. The team would find 18 aces total for the day. Queens would see 27 tying points in the match against Mars Hill and 20 during their fight with Francis Marion.
Mars Hill ran their offense through Rebecca Butler who tallied 14 kills for the day with a 23 digs. Mary Kate Griffin would trail just behind with 13 kills to go with a block and ace. Andie Russell took 32 assists while Victoria Kaiser would end two sets with an ace.
Alexzandra Reed would find 17 kills in the match far outshooting the rest of the floor. Sloane Shank assisted the team with 37 digs while Jessica Amador saved 26 attacks from hitting the floor.
Mars Hill would take an early 6-3 lead to start the match. As the Royals pushed back,
Katie Schoenrock would find the tie with an ace at 9-9. The two teams would see 11 more ties before the set would conclude. Thompson would have back-to-back aces to push the Royals out to a 13-11 lead.
Katrina Kirby would drive on to the ground putting the Royals in a 20-19 lead. However, a slight swing in momentum would have Mars Hill up by two in the closing moments of the set (24-22). After a 24-24 tie, Mars Hill would find Lauren Hochstetler for a kill before Victoria Kaiser would close with an ace 26-24.
The Royals would open the second set with a 9-1 run with Mars Hill looking for answers. After long rallying points, the Royals would find themselves tied at 9-9 due to a string of errors. Mars Hill would cap the comeback run with a kill from Butler to put the Lions in the lead 11-9. Queens would regain composure, however they would not catch the Mars Hill until a 22-22 tie in the set. That tying run would result from 7 unanswered Royals points and Cochran finding the Lion's floor three times for the Royals. Although Queens would hold on to the bitter end, Kaiser would end the match with an ace giving her team a 28-26 set score.
Queens would again push out to an early lead going up 6-3 to start Set 3. The Lions would battle back tying the game at 10-10 with Russell getting an ace for the tying point. Mars Hill would continue that run finding comfort in a 17-11 lead but Queens would recover. Cochran would grab an ace as Bialkowski and Kirby would push past the front wall of the Lions for kills. As the game fell to a 20-20 tie, Cochran and Thompson would keep the team in pursuit with tying points coming through a 24-24 matchup. Kaiser would again be up to serve but teammate Lauren Hochstetler would grab a kill to end the match 27-25.
The Royals would turn their focus to Francis Marion coming out to a strong start with a 5-1 run with Cochran and Bialkowski making their presence known early. The Royals would continue to hold their lead as Bialkowski took an ace to put the Royals ahead 7-3. The Patriots would rally together finding a 3-1 run to bring them within a 8-7 Royals' game before eventually tying things up at 10-10. The two teams would swap points until Queens found a two point buffer from a
Meredith Jones ace and a kill from Thompson. Shank would have the sole point for the Patriots before Queens could cap the set 25-18.
A level platform would arise as both team battled through a 5-5 tie. Breaking out into a 10-6 lead, Francis Marion sought Shelby Jones to provide separation between the two squads. The two teams would meet again at 14-14 where they would remain together well within the 20s. After a 24-24 tie, Shelby Schindler would take a kill before the set concluded off a block from Schindler and Chiquita Rivers.
Building from their prior set, Francis Marion would take off on a 12-3 run forcing Queens to call a timeout. Francis Marion would continue to dominate, finding a 20-9 lead as Shank took an ace for the Patriots.
Jessica Raines would find a late kill but the Royals would fall 25-13.
It would again be an early Francis Marion lead as they took 5 unanswered to start the set. The Patriots continued to build, seeing an 11-6 lead; however, errors and an ace by Kunz would allow the Royals to pull back within three (11-9). Cochran and Raines found points for the Royals but Francis Marion would continue to find answers moving out to 17-12 spot. A late sparked run from Queens would give Cochran a kill and provide a pair of points to Schoenrock as the team pull within one (22-21). Francis Marion would find their response closing the match 25-22.
The Royals head back on the road for a Halloween match against Newberry College (12-13, 5-7) on Friday, October 31.
