Queens defeats Eagles to increase win streak to four

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – All five of Queens University of Charlotte's starters reached double-figures in scoring this evening as the Royals (7-5) defeated Carson-Newman College (8-4), 75-68, in Curry Arena. The win is Queens' fourth in a row and helps the Royals jump to fourth in the South Atlantic Conference tied with the Eagles at 5-3.

Queens' starters scored all of the Royals' points minus three with senior Jarrett Stokes leading the way with 20 points. Senior forwards Josh Clyburn and Brent Evans scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, while junior forward Nkosi Ali added 12 points. Sophomore guard Joby Glymph rounded out the group with 12 points as well. Ali also grabbed eight rebounds, while Evans and Stokes each tallied seven.

The Royals had all the momentum at the start of today's game with a 9-0 run highlighted with a dunk from Nkosi Ali. The run forced the Eagles to call a timeout, and out of the thirty, Carson-Newman's Ray Likely knocked down a three-pointer to get the Eagles on the board. They would get to within four of the Royals before Jarrett Stokes scored a three-pointer to give Queens a 12-5 lead with 14:37 on the clock.

Queens kept control of the lead until the Eagles got their offense going just after the halfway mark tying the game up at 22-22 with a Reid Burke bucket from behind the three-point line. They would take the lead soon after, but another three from Stokes equalized things at 26-26 with less than five minutes to play in the half. An 11-2 run by the Eagles at the end of the half would take them into the break with a 37-28 lead over Queens.

A jumper from Carson-Newman's Antoine Davis 13 seconds into the second half would give the Eagles their largest lead of the game, 39-28, but it would be short lived as the Royals quickly took control with an 18-5 run to go ahead 46-43 with 14:19 on the clock. Burke would once again answer for the Eagles with a three to tie the game at 46-46, but a pair of free-throws from Stokes would follow, giving Queens the lead for good.

The Royals expanded their lead out to as much as 12 points in the final minutes of action to remain undefeated in conference play at home. The loss was only the third in two years for Carson-Newman, when leading at the half.

Davis led the Eagles with 21 points after shooting 50-percent from the floor, while Ishmael Sanders added 15 points. Carson Brooks chipped in with 10 points.

The Royals are on the road at Wingate University on Wednesday, January 15. Tip-off is at 8 p.m.
