Royals top the Tornado

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The men's and women's tennis teams travelled to King College today to take on the Tornado in one of the last matches of the regular season. With both teams looking to solidify their playoff positions the Royals picked up wins with the men finishing 6-3 and the women 8-1.

Men's side

The Royals were able to pick up two points in doubles due to the strong play of the pairings playing in the two and three spots. Bryce Boothby (Sudbury, Mass., Pendleton) and Andre Bafume (Leme, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Ateneo) added a point with a 8-5 victory, while Gustavo Munhoz (Santos, Brazil, COC Universitario) and Nizar Kuseybi (Greensboro, N.C., Northwest) won their set by the score of 8-4.

With a 2-1 lead the Royals entered the singles portion needing just three more points for a victory. But, not wanting a close match the Royals picked up four points.

Munhoz took his match in just two sets, but every other Royal victory were hard to come by and went all three sets. Adding points for the Royals with wins in three sets were Per-Erik Soler (Nice, France, Lycee du Parc Imperial), Bafume, and Kuseybi.

Women's side

The women picked up all three possible points in singles with wins by Christina Rustscheff (Toronto, Canada, Bayview Glen) and Erin Williams (Arden, N.C., T.C. Roberson) winning 8-2 and Amanda Poole (Douglasville, Ga., South Paulding) and Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) finishing 8-1.

In singles the Royals picked up five points to seal the 8-1 victory, and continue their streak of strong play against conference competition. Winning for the Royals in just two sets were Rustscheff, Paige Earnest (Charlotte, N.C., Charlotte Catholic), and Poole.

The men improve their record to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in conference, while the women are 11-3 and 7-2 in conference. The Royals host Barton tomorrow in their final home match of the regular season.
