CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens men's and women's tennis teams hosted Coker College in a crucial Conference Carolinas matchup today. The women continued their strong week winning by the score of 9-0, but the men were unable to overcome a strong Coker side and lost by the score of 7-2.
Men's recap
The men found themselves in a 2-1 hole following the doubles portion of the match with the Royals' point coming from the pairing of
Joshua Bloch (Johannesburg, South Africa, King David) and
Per-Erik Soler (Nice, France, Lycee du Parc Imperial). The Royals had several very close singles matches, but never could catch up to the surging Cobras. Junior
Andre Bafume picked up the Royals sole singles point in a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Women's recap
From the start the women were in control of the match and picked up all three points from the doubles competition. Recording wins for the Royals were the pairings of
Christina Rustscheff (Toronto, Canada, Bayview Glen) and
Erin Williams (Arden, N.C., T.C. Roberson) by the score 8-1,
Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) and
Amanda Poole (Douglasville, Ga., South Paulding) by the score 8-0, and
Farina Rafiq (Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, Cobequid Educational Centre) and
Paige Earnest (Charlotte, N.C., Charlotte Catholic) also by the score 8-0.
With the lead the Royals entered the singles portion of the match and never looked back. Queens won all six points, and no match went into the third set. Rustscheff, Roberts, Williams, Poole, Rafiq, and Earnest all picked up wins and helped cap off a week where the Royals went 4-0.
Following today's action the women are 8-2 and the men are 5-3. The Royals play next when the men travel to Erskine College this Saturday.
