Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte (11-10) dropped tonight's home contest with the Belmont Abbey College Crusaders (17-6), 85-79. The Royals fall to 8-7 in the league, while the Crusaders improve 10-5.
Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) and
Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) led the Royals offensively with 21 and 19 points, respectively.
David Mason (Decatur, Ga., Chamblee) added 12 points, while
Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) chipped in with 11.
The Crusaders got off to a 6-0 start before the Royals went on an 8-2 run to tie things up at 8-8 five minutes into play. The Royals' first lead would come at 12:25 on a three-pointer from
Ben Richter (Charlotte, N.C., Charlotte Christian) Eleven lead changes would follow as the Royals headed to the locker room trailing by two, 36-34, at the half.
The game of runs would continue into the second as Queens opened with a 10-2 spurt to go up by six almost three minutes into action. A 9-0 swing would allow the Crusaders to take a narrow three-point lead just two minutes later. Both teams traded baskets over the next five minutes before the Crusaders went ahead for good on a three-point basket at 12:16.
Belmont Abbey shot 14-14 from the foul line in the final 12 minutes of play to hold on to their lead.
The Royals shot 59.3 percent from the floor this evening and outscored the Crusaders 48-26 in the paint.
Despite being held to 4-of-12 shooting, the nation's leading scorer, Tyshawn Good, recorded 21 points after shooting a perfect 11-of-11 from the foul line. Darryl Durham also scored 21 points, while Terrone Sheffey added 18 points. Jay Council scored 14 points.
Queens returns to action on Saturday against Erskine College at 7:30 p.m. for Homecoming.
