Royals comeback at home falls short

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team hosted Coker College in a conference game this evening, falling 66-64. The loss gives the Royals a 1-4 overall record while bringing their SAC record to 0-3. The Cobras improve to 4-1 on the year and 2-1 in the league.
 
Shonice Pettaway and Nikia Squire led Queens in scoring tonight with 15 points apiece. Squire also recorded five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Abby Pettit added 10 points, while Tia Hudgins led all on the court with 12 rebounds.
 
With 12 seconds to play, the Coker Cobras, having possessed the ball on a shot clock violation by the Royals, dribbled the length of the court, finding a bucket at the top of the paint from leading scorer Tanesha Stenson for the 66-64 win at the buzzer.
 
The Royals had put together a comeback in the second half after falling behind by as much as 11 points. A three-pointer from sophomore guard Nikia Squire at 4:31 would cap a 16-8 run for the Royals bringing them to within three, 59-56, of the Cobras. Kelly Godbout would give Coker a bucket at 4:10 with a jumper to put the Cobras back up by five before Queens responded with eight straight points to take a 64-61 lead with 58 seconds on the clock.
 
The Cobras, having been forced to take a timeout and regroup, would tie the game at 64-64 on the back of a three-point basket from Hailey Yohn. A turnover by Queens would give the Cobras the opportunity to win the game with the final possession.
 
The Royals trailed Coker 30-26 at the half after shooting 37.9 percent from the floor compared the Cobras' 50 percent shooting.
 
A layup from Yohn of Coker would put the Cobras up 8-3 at 16:59 before the Royals got going with a three-point play the old-fashioned way by Pettit. The junior guard would rebound a missed shot on a fast-break to score her basket while getting fouled. She then recorded a steal on the defensive end of the floor allowing Queens to tie the game at 8-8 on a rebound, put-back bucket from sophomore Hudgins.
 
A layup by sophomore guard Nikia Squire would follow, giving Queens its first lead of the game, 10-8, at 13:29. Coker's Tanesha Stenson responded with a layup of her own to knot things back up with 12:53 to play, but Queens' Squire answered again on the other end with two consecutive lay-ins, giving Queens a 14-10 advantage at 10:50. Queens would go cold the on their next couple of offensive possessions, giving the Cobras the chance to regain control of the lead. Patricia Sullivan would be the one to take the lead back for Coker on a three-point play with 9:51 to play in the half. The Cobras would keep control into the break.
 
Stenson led Coker's offense with 21 points, while Yohn scored 12 points and Jessica Cohen added 10 points.
 
The Royals are on the road at Livingstone College on Tuesday, December 3 at 5:30 p.m.
