Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team defeated Converse College (0-2) today on the road to collect their first win of the 2013-14 season. The 63-47 win puts the Royals at 1-1 on the season.
The Valkyries would lead early in the game for a short period of time before a layup from
Tia Hudgins put the Royals ahead, 5-4, at 15:36. A 12-0 run would follow for Queens, giving the Royals a 17-4 lead at the 8:57 mark. Queens continued to build their lead in the closing minutes of half, while shutting Converse down on the defensive end. The Royals led 32-16 at the break.
At 18:38 in the second half, Queens saw its largest lead of the day when Hudgins put another layup through the hoop to give the Royals a 38-18 advantage. The Royals would keep an 18-20 point cushion up until the Valkyries strung together a series of short runs to cut Queens' lead to nine, 52-43, with 5:25 on the clock.
Micha Cox would hit a jumper to put the Royals' lead back in the double digits, but Converse's Margo Dill responded with a bucket of her own to cut it back to nine, 54-45, at 3:48. The two teams would trade baskets for the remainder of play which only worked in the Royals' favor as they went on to collect the nonconference victory.
Cox led the Royals offense today with 15 points, while Hudgins added 14 points.
McKell Oliverio added 12 points.
Samira Gillcrese led Converse with 12 points today, while Dill ended with 10 points.
The Royals will begin conference play on Wednesday at Lenoir-Rhyne University in a doubleheader with the men. The women will play at 6 p.m.
