Royals take down the Rams in three sets

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team hosted Winston-Salem State on Friday in the Curry Arena in a midseason non-conference match. Queens was able to sweep the match 3-0, taking their record to 10-9 overall.

In the first set the Royals quickly flexed their muscles. Seniors Brittney Barren, Anna Gibbs, and Ashlyn Dibrell helped the Royals go on a multiple run streaks by through their strong offensive play. Ahead most of the match Queens continued to build on their lead, but the Rams were able to rally back making the score 24-19. Queens was able to finish the set with Dibrell serving an ace for the winning point.

In the third set Queens was able to open up a lead but Winston-Salem State was able to rally back, tying the set 5-5. The Royals quickly went onto a run to get back on top of their opponents. Soon after Keri Kemp added two kills in a row putting the Royals ahead 15-10 Senior Jocelyn Kellinger highlighted the match through behind the service line where she led her team to a nine point run.

In the third and final set, the Royals quickly trailed behind Winston-Salem State. The Royals were able to quickly rally by going on an eight run streak making them only trail 18-15. After a kill by Gibbs the Royals were able to finally get ahead of Winston-Salem State University but not for long. The third set quickly became an adrenalin rush as the Royals and Winston-Salem State went point for point with the Royals taking the set 25-23. 

Statistically, both Barren and Kemp brought in 11 kills, while Kemp also added 17 digs. Second in the conference with assists, Taylor Riley tallied 39 assists from her setter position. The Royals play this Saturday when they host South Atlantic Conference opponent Tusculum at 12:00pm.
