Royals take out No. 22 Wingate on the road

Box Score WINGATE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team traveled to face No. 22 Wingate University this evening defeating the Bulldogs 3-2 in overtime. The Royals improve to 5-2-2 in league action moving them into third place, while their overall record improves to 10-3-2. Wingate, having their five-game win streak snapped by Queens, now sits at 6-2-1 in the SAC and 10-2-3 overall.

The Royals would jump out to a 1-0 lead 17:23 into play with a goal from freshman forward Kelli Gottry. Gottry would chip the ball over Wingate goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie after receiving a pass from senior forward Brooke Foil. The goal was the first scored on the Bulldogs in five games and it would be the only one scored in the first half that saw a combined total of 11 shots.

Foil would be the one to put Queens ahead, 2-0, ten minutes into the second half putting the ball into the corner of the net from the top of the box. Freshman midfielder Caitlyn Rodrigues would notch the assist on the play.

The Bulldogs would get going with just 19 minutes to play in regulation, putting two points on the board in less than nine minutes. The first would come from Brandy Baldwin from 30 yards out, while the second from Chandler Murphy would come in a two-on-one opportunity with Queens goalkeeper Jessyca Young.

Neither team would put a shot on goal in the closing minutes of regulation.

With it looking as if the game would go into a second overtime period, Queens found themselves in a very advantageous position winning a corner kick. Freshman defender Ashley Osiecki would deliver the ball into the box where it was kicked around before sophomore forward Mary Stringini was able to put it into the corner of the net for the golden goal victory.

The Royals were outshot by Wingate, 19-12 on the night, but held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Young had four saves for Queens, while Hardie registered four saves for the Bulldogs.

Tonight's win over the Bulldogs was the first for the Royals since the 2007 season when they won 1-0 in overtime.

Queens will be on the road again at Carson-Newman College Saturday for a 5 p.m., game.
