WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's tennis teams were on the road today as they faced off against Winston-Salem State. Both the men and women displayed their strength, and each team won decisively by the score of 7-2.
Both sides started 3-0 in the match when they swept the Rams in the doubles side of the competition. On the men's side the parings of
Ignacio Casali (Farmingdale, N.Y., Farmingdale) and
Ole-Jacob Meum (Stabekk, Norway, Wang Athletic Gymnasium) Joshua Bloch (Johannesburg, South Africa, King David) and
Per-Erik Soler (Nice, France, Lycee du Parc Imperial) and
Gustavo Munhoz (Santos, Brazil, COC Universitario) and
Andre Bafume (Leme, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Ateneo) picked up wins for Queens.
On the women's side it was
Christina Rustscheff (Toronto, Canada, Bayview Glen) and
Erin Williams (Arden, N.C., T.C. Roberson), Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) and
Amanda Poole (Douglasville, Ga., South Paulding) and
Farina Rafiq (Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, Cobequid Educational Centre) and Paige Earnest earning points for the Royals.
Head coach
Brett Karpman was particularly happy with these performances, and believes that “as long as doubles improve and evolve it puts (them) in a great place to contend and win conference.”
The Royals continued their strong play on the singles side as the men picked up four more wins. Casali led off a string of victories with a 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 well fought match that left the Royals in the driver's seat for the match. Three other Royals picked up wins in single as Soler, Bafume, and
Nizar Kuseybi (Greensboro, N.C., Northwest) raced through their matches and earned victories in two sets.
The women were led by a banged-up Rustcheff who battled through injuries to take a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Joining her were Roberts who won 6-2, 6-1, Rafiq who won 6-0, 6-2, and Poole who finished off her opponent 6-0, 6-1.
The Royals return to Charlotte where they will spend the winter preparing to make a run at a Conference Carolinas title. Keep up with all you Queens tennis news and updates at QueensAthletics.com.
