CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's tennis teams hosted Charlotte neighbors Johnson C. Smith at Freedom Park today. The Royals looked the part of an early contender in Conference Carolinas as the men won 9-0, and women taking their match 8-1.
From the start both the Royals dictated their matches, and both the men's and women's teams swept their doubles matchups. On the men's side the closest match was a 8-2 win by
Ole-Jacob Meum (Stabekk, Norway, Wang Athletic Gymnasium) and
Ignacio Casali (Farmingdale, N.Y., Farmingdale) with the other two doubles competitions ending as 8-0 wins for the Royals. The women also swept their doubles competition with the pair of
Amanda Poole (Douglasville, Ga., South Paulding) and
Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) leading the way with a 8-0 win.
With both teams up 3-0 in their matches head coach
Brett Karpman said it was then that they became even more relentless. After the match he pointed out that his team simply “took care of business,” and performed to its capabilities.
In singles the women's team continued to display their talent and only dropped one of their singles matchups. Playing in the number one spot Roberts led the way with a 6-3, 6-1 win, and was joined by two set wins by Poole,
Erin Williams (Arden, N.C., T.C. Roberson), and
Farina Rafiq (Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, Cobequid Educational Centre).
Continuing in the theme of excellent play the men swept their singles matches. Casali,
Joshua Bloch (Johannesburg, South Africa, King David) Meum, and
Lucas Motta Dutra Martins (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Centro Educational de Lagoa/ University of Mobile) all picked up wins for the Royals. Joining them in the winners circles were the especially dominant
