Royals take down the Falcons

Box Score CHARLOTTE N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Volleyball team hosted the Pfeiffer University Falcons today in a Conference Carolinas matchup. The first place Royals made easy work of the Falcons, and took the match in just three sets.
 
In the first set the Royals jumped to an early lead before Pfeiffer evened it at 8-8. From there the Royals were able to take the lead, but never quite pulled away from their opponents. The Royals hit .240 in the set to Pfeiffer's .222, and the Queens ended the set on a Pfeiffer attack error to give them the 25-21 win.
 
In the second set the Royals' offense came alive with a .407 hitting percentage and 12 kills. The Royals maintained a lead throughout the set, and took command of the match at 11-5 following a string of strong serves by Sarah Malpass (Gainesville, Fla., Gainesville)  Queens continued to pile on the offense, and eventually took the set 25-15 on a thunderous Brittney Barren (Ham Lake, Minn., Blaine) kill.
 
The story of the third and final set was the serving of Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) who took the Royals to an 8-0 lead with two service aces, and a consistent barrage of hard-to-handle serves. From there the Royals never looked back and Queens hit .348 in the set to help give them a 25-13 win.
 
Offensively the Royals were led by Barren with 14 kills and a .522 hitting percentage. Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary) pitched in with seven kills, and Taylor Riley (Lynchburg, Va., E.C. Glass) led the Royals with 24 assists. On the day the Royals controlled the net and Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) paced the defense with four blocks, and Kellinger was able to pick up nine digs from her libero position.
 
Queens currently stands at 17-10 overall and 10-1 in conference. The Royals return to action this Saturday when they travel to Limestone at 2:00 p.m.
