The Royals defeated Converse 79-41.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore forward Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) recorded her sixth double-double of the year with 22 points and 12 rebounds pacing the Royals in their 79-41 victory over Converse College (2-8, 2-17). Queens University of Charlotte used solid play in the paint to create the large margin between themselves and the Valkyries outscoring their opponent 42-8 in the paint this afternoon.

Pettaway also led all players on the floor with six steals on the defensive end of the floor as Queens collected 17 steals compared to Converse's five. Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) delivered a 15 point performance on 6-of-9 shooting, while Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, N.C., Rocky Mount) was one rebound away from a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Melissa Thomas (Havelock, N.C., Havelock) scored ten points and Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) notched nine points and seven rebounds.

The Valkyries were led by Colleen Leung who scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Leung was the only player from Converse to reach double-digit scoring as the next highest point getters were Kayla Garrett and Samira Gillcrese who scored six points apiece. Gillcrese was also able to record eight rebounds in the loss. Jasmine Middlebrooks led all with six assists.

Queens jumped out to a five point lead early in the game before Converse knocked down a pair of baskets closing the gap to one. The Royals would go up by no more than six points over the next seven minutes before an 8-0 run gave the home team a 24-14 lead with 8:13 on the clock. Garrett disrupted Queens' run with a shot from behind the three-point line, but the Royals responded quickly with a 9-0 spurt creating even more breathing room. Shatonya Hardy (Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith) scored the last three points of the half on a jumper and a free-throw giving Queens a 16-point lead at the break, 38-22.

The Royals did just enough to maintain their lead through the first four minutes of the half. Thomas got Queens going with a fastbreak layup at the 16-minute mark beginning the Royals' 14-0 run breaking the game open. After back-to-back buckets from Converse's Gillcrese and Garrett, the Royals turned up the defensive pressure even more reeling off ten straight points to go up 35, 69-34. The Royals closed the game with their reserves as all Queens players put points on the board en route to the 79-41 win.

The Royals are back in action at Barton College on February 2 in Wilson, N.C. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
