CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A hard fought battle played by the women's soccer team ended with the Royals (0-5) on the unlucky end as the heartbreaker came to an end with 2:56 left on the clock in the second overtime. Wingate University's Casey King met a ball cleared by the home team booting it from 18-yards out just missing the hands of Queens University of Charlotte's keeper
Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va., Maury). With the goal the Bulldogs (2-2) escaped the Queens Sports Complex with the dramatic 4-3 win.
The Royals got on the board first, when sophomore midfielder
Brooke Foil (Knightdale, N.C., Knightdale) headed in a feed from freshman forward
Macie McGuffin (Richland Hills, Texas, Birdville) in the 29
th minute of the opening half. After a foul by the visiting team, McGuffin stepped up to take a free kick from the left side serving the ball just over Wingate's defenders so that Foil was able to sneak it in on the back.
Wingate had the answer with 4:11 remaining in the first half, when junior forward Shelby Forza netted a goal tying the game up at 1-1.
The contest was tied at halftime, with Wingate holding a 10-4 advantage in shots and 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs had 11 corner kicks in the opening half, while Queens had one. Seretis had four well played saves in the half.
The Bulldogs took the lead 15 minutes into the second half, when senior defender Megan Mastalerz scored.
McGuffin scored her second career goal five minutes later to tie the contest at two, with the assist coming from junior forward
Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside). Wright spotted McGuffin on the far side crossing a ball to her that she passed into the net.
The tie lasted less than a minute, as Wingate senior forward Hannah Holsclaw netted an easy one making the score 3-2. Izabella Miranda assisted her on the play.
With 7:10 remaining in regulation
Heather Wilemon (Statesville, N.C., Statesville) answered for Queens sneaking a ball past Wingate's keeper for the tie. Foil had the assist on the game-tying goal.
The first overtime period went by scoreless. The Royals had a chance to take the game on a header by Wilemon that was saved at the last minute by a Wingate defender.
The second overtime period played out much like the first with both teams battling on the defensive end. Seretis showed up big for the Royals stopping a number of scoring opportunities for the Bulldogs. However, the last shot of the game by King found its way into the net giving the win to the Bulldogs.
Despite the Bulldogs out-shooting Queens 27-10 on the night, the Royals stayed in the game on spectacular play by Seretis who collected 13 saves. Wingate sophomore goalkeeper Carly Rives had a pair of saves for the Bulldogs.
The Royals travel to St. Andrews Presbyterian College Saturday at 2 p.m. for their first Conference Carolinas match of the year.
