Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte faced the Blue Bears of Livingstone College picking up their sixth loss of the season. The Royals lost 76-72 in a game that saw 12 lead changes falling to 1-6 on the season. The Blue Bears improve to 3-5.
Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) recorded her second double-double of the season with 25 points and 11 rebounds. She also collected three steals.
Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) and
Shatonya Hardy (Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith) contributed 14 points apiece for the Royals. Myatt also grabbed five rebounds, while Hardy dished out five assists.
Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) led all players on the floor with seven of Queens' 16 assists.
Leading the Blue Bears was Kelcyn Manurs who shot a perfect 14-of-14 from the free-throw line en route to scoring a game-high 26 points. She also collected seven rebounds. Tiffany Evans added 13 points, while Jasmine Murray notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.
Myatt gave the Royals their final lead of the game at 59-58 with a jumper at the 5:21 mark in the second half. Free-throws from Livingstone's Manur put the Blue Bears back ahead. They then built their lead out to as much as four with much help from additional opportunities at the charity stripe. With under two minutes to go the Royals had a chance to tie the game after back-to-back fouls. However, Queens missed three of the four shots at the free-throw line forcing them to foul as the Blue Bears held out for the win.
In the first half of play, Pettaway gave Queens their first lead of the game at 7-5 after scoring a layup. She followed with another bucket as Queens went on a 15-to-7 run building their lead out to 10 halfway through the period, 22-12. The Blue Bears who had gone cold on offense, responded with a run of their own tying the game up at 30-30 with 3:36 in the first. Murray then gave Livingstone the lead with two shots at the line. Pettaway would knock down a shot before the break to give Queens back the lead before heading into the locker room.
The Royals scored 17 second chance points compared to 13 from the Blue Bears this afternoon, while Livingstone edged Queens in the paint with 28 points compared to the Royals' 26. The Royals' bench outscored Livingstone's 23-13.
Queens will travel for a rematch against Johnson C. Smith on Monday, December 5. In their first meeting, the Golden Bulls took a 72-63 victory. The game is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
