Queens loses match to Bobcats

The Royals were defeated 4-2.

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Royals traveled to Banner Elk, N.C., to play the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College losing 4-2 in the match. Queens University of Charlotte (4-7-1) drops to 4-2-1 in the league in women's soccer action while the Bobcats (8-2-1) remain undefeated in the conference at 7-0.

Hope Hartman (Buies Creek, N.C., Homeschool) netted her second goal of the season in the fourth minute of action. Samantha Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside ) took a shot that met the crossbar falling right in front of Hartman at the mouth of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats would score two goals late in the half taking a 2-1 lead heading into the break. Meagan Thornton scored both for the home team.

Over 25 minutes went by in the second half before another goal was scored. Brooke Santerre of Lees-McRae was able to find the back of the net on a free kick from 20 yards out. Ten minutes later Thornton struck again running onto a long through ball from Emily Jones of the Bobcats and scoring it for a 4-1 lead in the 83rd minute.

Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) responded for the Royals three minutes later with her sixth goal of the season. Wright's goal was the last of the game as the Bobcats fought off Queens' offense in the final minutes of play.

The Royals were outshot 25-to-12 in this evenings match. The Bobcats also won 12 corner kicks to Queens' two. Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va., Maury) played in goal for Queens collecting nine saves, while Kaitlyn Briggs defended the net for Lees-McRae getting six stops.

The Royals will return to the field on Wednesday at 5 p.m., when they face Mount Olive College at the Queens Sports Complex.
