CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Royals returned to conference play this evening defeating the Cobras of Coker College in three dominating sets (25-12, 25-14, 25-18). Queens University of Charlotte improves to 11-6 on the season and 6-1 in the league still holding control of the number one spot in the East Division. Coker falls to 6-10 overall and 3-4 in Conference Carolinas action.
The Royals had an impressive .304 hitting percentage in the win after a spectacular first set that featured a .433 hitting percentage.
Brittany Harvey (Matthews, N.C., Sun Valley ) led the Royals collecting 10 kills and just one error on 15 attempts for a game-high .600 hitting percentage. Harvey also tallied six blocks on the defensive end.
Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary) put down nine balls, while
Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) and
Alexa Sparrell (Winter Park, Fla., Winter Park) put down six apiece.
Ashlyn Dibrell (Arlington, Texas, Lamar) dished out 16 assists alongside
Taylor Riley's (Lynchburg, Va., E.C. Glass)14.
Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) led all with 13 digs in the match.
April Griggs led the Cobras' attack with five kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Hannah Vadakin contributed five kills to Coker's offense alongside Anna Schwark's six. Setter Samantha Celek collected 13 assists.
The Royals were a dominating force in the first set notching 15 kills on 30 attempts in route to the 25-12 win. Coker's defense struggled through the set not collecting a single dig.
Queens continued playing well in the second keeping at least a 10-point cushion between themselves and the Cobras.
The third and final set was close in the beginning with Coker opening with an ace. The Royals responded building a lead that would be cut to five after a service error by the home team. Huge kills by Kemp, Sparrell and Harvey extended Queens' lead as they went on the take the match.
Queens returns to the court on Friday night to play conference rival Pfeiffer University for their annual Dig Pink event. The game is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
