Women’s soccer concludes season in PK shootout with Crusaders

The game ended in a 0-0 tie after double overtime.

BELMONT, N.C. –Sixth-seeded Queens University of Charlotte battled Belmont Abbey College, seeded third, to a 0-0 draw after two overtime periods passed with no score in the quarterfinal round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament.

The game then went to a penalty kick shootout that the Royals lost 4-3. The contest is officially labeled a draw as the Crusaders move to the semifinal round with an 11-7-1 mark, while Queens ends its season with a mark of 7-10-2.

The match was evenly played throughout though the Royals were outshot 11-3 by the Crusaders. Queens had the edge in corner kicks at 5-4. Belmont Abbey keeper Hannah Kohls made two saves, while counterpart Megan Hirschy (Fort Wayne, Ind., Shattuck-St.Mary's School) collected six.

The best scoring chance of the game came for the Abbey late in the first half as Rebecca Mateo fired a shot off the crossbar, and no serious chances came for either team for the rest of the match, forcing a penalty kick shootout.

Queens kicked first and went ahead on a shot byLauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman ). Kristin Foster responded in kind. Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) put the Royals ahead with a successful spot kick and it stayed that way after Carly Kensinger's attempt hit the right post. Kohls stymied the Queens momentum when she stopped Amanda Wright's (Salisbury, Md., Parkside ) attempt. Hirschy then stopped Connie Axiotis's ensuing try to keep the score 2-1 Queens.

The Royals' Macie McGuffin (Richland Hills, Texas, Birdville) buried the next attempt giving Queens a 3-1 lead. Belmont Abbey's Nicole Voets would answer with her own goal to make the score 3-2. Next up was Queens' Kathryn Sylvester (Cary, N.C., Apex ) whose attempt was stopped by Kohls. Silvia Vazquez of the Crusaders then used a nifty fake to beat Hirschy to the lower right corner. Her goal tied the shootout at three.

Samantha Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside ) opened the door for the Crusaders when her attempt missed to the left, but Hirschy kept Queens alive with a save of Alexa Hale. With Queens needing a goal to advance, Kohls swatted away Kariel Parian's (Auburn, N.H., Manchester Memorial ) attempt and Clark ended the game with a shot to the left side of the net.
