Royals sweep Erskine on Senior Night for second in the league

Queens won 3-0.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Royals brought out the broom this evening sweeping the Flying Fleet of Erskine College in volleyball action to take over the number two spot in the league. Queens University of Charlotte defeated Erskine by scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-16. The Royals (17-7) improve to 11-2, while the Fleet (16-12) fall to 11-3.

Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary) paced the Royals' attack collecting 11 kills on a .429 clip. Brittany Harvey (Matthews, N.C., Sun Valley ) notched seven kills and Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) six kills. Setter Avery Moore (Arlington, Texas, Lamar) dished out 18 assists and tallied 13 digs to complete the only double-double of the night. Brittney Barren (Ham Lake, Minn., Blaine) led Queens with a game high 17 digs. Harvey led all with six of Queens' 13 total blocks.

Lauren Stewart and Caitlin Bullock led the Flying Fleet with 10 kills apiece. Larz Chabra led all players with 29 assists. On defense, Brooke Dodge collected 16 digs for her squad.

Erskine jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set before the Royals battled back tying the set up at 15-15 on a block. An attack error by the Flying Fleet gave Queens its first lead of the game. The set would see one more draw before Kemp caught fire tallying two kills in a row followed by an ace by Barren forcing a timeout by the visitors. The Royals stayed in control out of the short break taking the 1-0 lead in the match.

Set two was a close one seeing six ties. Queens was able to create some space late going up by three on kills by Gibbs and Kemp. A kill by Erskine's Sandra Campbell cut the Royals' lead to two, 24-22, before Kemp put down another ball for the 2-0 lead in the match.

The final set was all Queens as they led by as much as 11 points on a few occasions. Erskine went on a 4-0 run late cutting the lead to seven, but the Royals had enough cushion to pull out the 25-16 win for second place in Conference Carolinas.

Seniors Harvey and Erica Mazur (Waxhaw, N.C., Weddington) were recognized before tonight's game for their accomplishments at Queens.

The Royals will have little time to rest as they are traveling down to Spartanburg, S.C., to face Converse College and Lincoln Memorial College tomorrow at noon and 2 pm.
