Men’s soccer Senior Day spoiled by Bulldogs in OT

Barton defeated the Royals 2-1 in OT.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Justin Ferguson (Denver, Colo., Cherry Creek) scored a game-tying goal in the 88th minute of play leading the Royals to overtime with Barton College on what was Senior Day. The Bulldogs (3-5-1 6-10-1) escaped with a 2-1 win over Queens University of Charlotte (3-6 4-11-1) putting the Royals in eighth place in Conference Carolinas as they took over seventh.

Justin Taylor of the Bulldogs scored an unassisted goal in the 31st minute that gave Barton a 1-0 lead for the majority of the game.

The Royals had multiple opportunities to score just missing the goal a number of times.

The final chance for Queens to tie the game up came in the 88th minute after a foul was called and a red card was given to Barton's keeper Brian Riesenberg removing him from the game. Ferguson stepped up to take the free kick just outside the 18-yard box and fired. The ball soared past the Bulldog's replacement keeper Dalton Bauer giving the game a 1-1 score.

Archer Bane would spoil the Royals' hopes for a victory just over a minute into overtime. Richard Worthy passed a ball to Bane in the box that Queens keeper Simen Walmann dove after. Walmann missed the ball by an inch as Bane received and netted it for the golden goal.

The Royals shot 14 shots to Barton's 17 and each team won five corner kicks. Walmann finished the game with six saves while Riesenberg collected five before exiting play after receiving his red card.

Queens' seniors were recognized before today's game began. They included Ferguson, Ely Friedman (Paris, Ky., Bourbon County )Michael Lum (Trussville, Ala., Hewitt Trussville ), and Jon Rektorli (Inverness, Ill., Barrington).

Queens will be traveling for the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament. They must wait for all of tonight's games to conclude before finding out who their Tuesday night opponent will be.
