Kemp's double-double lifts volleyball over Converse in five-set battle

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Queens volleyball won their fourth consecutive game Saturday afternoon, defeating Converse College in five sets (20-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-18, 15-8) to improve to 5-3 (11-5) in conference and into a tie for fourth place with rival Belmont Abbey.

After losing a hard-fought third set to fall behind two sets to one, something clicked for the Royals' offense. In sets four and five, they tallied a total 27 kills, hitting .310 and .524, respectively.

Despite the difficult start to the match, head coach Angela McGuire is proud of her team's ability to rebound and battle their way back.

“This certainly wasn't the best match we have played this season,” said McGuire.

“We struggled with ball control, serving, and attacking. It simply came down to the team who was going to make the fewest amount of errors, and we played almost errorless volleyball in the last two sets to seal the match.

Brittany Harvey (Matthews, N.C., Sun Valley ), Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary), and Alexa Sparrell (Winter Park, Fla., Winter Park) put forth strong efforts in the win, as they tallied 41 of the Royals' 59 kills on the day. Harvey's 14 came on 26 attempts to hit a match-high .500. Kemp paired her 15 with 17 digs to contribute her first double-double of the season, while Sparrell's 12 and nine digs came just shy of her third career double-double.

Avery Moore (Arlington, Texas, Lamar) and Taylor Riley (Lynchburg, Va., E.C. Glass) continued to split time directing the attack, combining for 45 assists on the afternoon. Moore's 19 came with a career-high 15 digs for her second double-double of the season.

In limited action, freshman libero Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) added a defensive presence for the Royals, tallying 10 digs in one set.

“We dug deep into our bench today when a few of our starters struggled and they all did a fantastic job of getting the job done. I am very proud of how they all battled together.”

After a perfect 3-0 week, the Royals will take a few days to rest before a pair of home matches on October 5th and 6th.

Before facing Brevard College on Wednesday, the Royals look to take sole possession of fourth place in the conference with a victory over Belmont Abbey.

Taking place in Ovens Athletic Center, both games are slated for 6:30 p.m. starts
