Volleyball jumps into fourth place with win at Mount Olive

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Queens volleyball (8-4 CC, 15-6) defeated Mount Olive (1-10, 3-16) in three sets (25-12; 25-23; 25-13) to take possession of fourth place in the Conference Carolinas.

Alexa Sparrell (Winter Park, Fla., Winter Park) filled the stat sheet with eight kills, eight digs, four aces, and two blocks to lead the Royals to their fourth straight win.

Erica Conner had a team-high seven kills for the Trojans, with Kailey Preece and Carly White adding five kills each. Preece also had 10 assists and six digs, and Ashlee Reuter chipped in four blocks.

Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary) added seven kills, three aces, and 13 digs, while Ashley Winters (Fredericktown, Ohio, Highland) contributed seven kills and four blocks.

Mount Olive rallied from an early 5-1 deficit in game one to tie the match at 7-all on an attack error by Queens. The Royals immediately rolled off the next five points, however, behind Kemp, who had a pair of aces during the run. The Trojans closed as close as 12-9 on a block by Reuter and Lauren Lee, but could get no closer. Leading 14-10, Queens won the next seven points with Avery Moore (Arlington, Texas, Lamar) on the service line. Moore had two aces during the stretch.

In the second set, Mount Olive quickly jumped out to a 6-1 advantage, using two kills by White and a kill and a block by Conner to spark the run. Queens closed to 9-7, but Preece helped Mount Olive regain possession with a kill, then served three straight winning points to give the Trojans their largest lead of the match at 13-7.

After a timeout and Trojan service error gave Queens possession, the Royals turned the tide with seven straight points, including three straight service aces by Sparrell. Winters also had a pair of kills during the spurt.

The Royals moved up by four points at 20-16 on a Mount Olive service error, but the Trojans rallied one more time behind a kill from Preece and then three straight kills from Tiffany Hight to give Mount Olive a 21-20 lead. With the score still tied at 23-all, Sparrell delivered two straight kills to end the set.

Queens jumped out to a 9-4 advantage in the third set and built the lead to double digits en route to the 25-13 win.

The Royals will take the rest of weekend off before hosting first place Lees-McRae (12-0, 14-6)  on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
