Volleyball sweeps home-and-home with Limestone

The win improves their conference record to 7-4

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Avery Moore's (Arlington, Texas, Lamar) 36 assists and 12 digs led Queens volleyball past Limestone College in a Conference Carolinas volleyball match Tuesday night in Gaffney, S.C. Winning in three sets (26-24; 25-17; 25-15), the Royals sweep a home-and-home series for the first time since 2008 (Converse and Coker) and improve to 7-4 (14-6) in the conference.

Neither team would give an inch in Game one as they battled out to a 10-10 tie before a 4-0 run by the Saints gave them a 14-10 advantage. It would be short lived as Queens then closed to within 16-14 before a service error put the lead back at three. Four consecutive points on the Royals' side then put them ahead at 18-17. Limestone would tie the set briefly on the next point before a 6-4 stretch pushed the lead to 24-21. The Saints battled all the way back, tying the frame at 24-24 but back-to-back scores by the Royals locked up the set with a 26-24 victory.

In the second set, the teams once again had a back-and-forth affair, deadlocking seven times before settling at 15-15. From there, the Royals took over as they notched an impressive 10-2 run to close out the frame with a 25-17 victory and increase their lead to 2-0 in the match.

Game three continued to feature a number of ties early on with the teams finally coming to an 11-11 score. That would be the last time they would be that close as Queens used a 14-4 run, fueled by three straight kills at the start, to run the table and take the set, and the match, by a 25-15 score.

Freshman outside hitter Alexa Sparrell (Winter Park, Fla., Winter Park) led the Royals with a match-high 11 kills along with nine digs.

Head coach Angela McGuire spoke highly of her players on the front line.

"Offensively we executed from all positions and that was what set us up to win," said McGuire. "Our passing was very up and down but our hitters made very smart decisions on placing ball.

Redshirt-freshman Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary) added 10 kills and junior middle hitter Brittany Harvey (Matthews, N.C., Sun Valley ) finished with nine kills.

"A great compliment to these girls is that they kept their composure and patience on every point. They stayed steady and worked through every ball."

Sophomore libero Sarah Malpass (Gainesville, Fla., Gainesville) and freshman defensive specialist Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) each added 12 digs.

Emmaleigh Halweg led Limestone with eight kills and Danielle Seibert nearly had a double-double with 23 assists and eight digs while freshman libero Rebecca Kerrison led the team with 11 digs. Junior outside hitter Holli Dawson chipped in with 10 digs and senior middle hitter Brittney Miller added six kills.

The Royals have Wednesday off before retuning to the court for back-to-back matches at Barton (7-3, 10-9) and Mount Olive (1-9, 3-15) on Thursday and Friday.
