CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team finished the regular season on a strong note with a 69-57 win over Saint Andrews Presbyterian College Thursday night at the Ovens Athletics Center. The night was marked by Senior Night festivities honoring the two Queens seniors, Patrick Fox (Eden, N.C. , Morehead) and Dominque Ester (Creedmoor, N.C. , South Granville ).
Queens (7-20/6-14 CC) now will play in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament on Saturday in Gaffney, S.C., against Limestone College, the No. 8 seed. The Royals are the No. 9 seed.
Queens trailed by six to end the half, but were behind by as many as 15 in the first 20 minutes of play. In the last 5:32 of the game Queens doubled up on the Knights in scoring, outscoring them 11-5, and closing the lead down to six at the buzzer, 35-29.
The Royals continued to roll in the second half, catching the Knights at the 13:40 mark. The teams traded baskets for the next three minutes until Queens came out with the edge, 49-48, with a field goal made by Kevin Fowler (Mexico, N.Y. , Mexico Academy).
In the remaining time, Queens took the one point advantage to 13 and finished with a 12 point margin, 69-57.
Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) and Fowler each recorded double-doubles for the Royals. Bailey had 16 points and 11 boards while Fowler scored 10 and pulled down 13 boards.
Josh Gripper led all scorers with 19 points and led the Knights with eight rebounds. Taiwon Grooms contributed 11 points and four boards.
