Royals Roll Past Converse, 85-67

Four Queens players register double-figures

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Four Queens players registered double figures in the 85-67 win over Converse College Saturday afternoon at the Ovens Athletics Center.

“Our team played with great intensity on both ends of the court,” said head coach Trudi Lacey. “We did a super job offensively with four players in double figures.”

Erin Goldner (Matthews, N.C., Piedmont)led all scoring in the game with 23 points, Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C., Harding University) tallied 18, Shakendra Hicks (Rock Hill, S.C., Rock Hill) scored 16 and Shakaria Hamlin (Hartsville, S.C., Hartsville) rounded out the Royals productive offense with 10.

The Royals (12-11/11-7 Conference Carolinas) held the Valkyries (4-19/4-14 CC) to nine baskets in the first half. Queens did send them to the free throw line for 15 attempts, but they could only convert on six shots. The Royal offense connected on 14 of 27 shots and was 78% from the free throw line, 11-14.

Five minutes into the first half, Queens was trailing by five, but a bucket by Hudley at the 14:26 mark gave Queens a one point lead. The Royals did not allow the visitors to take the lead away for the remainder of the game.

Queens held a 15 point advantage at the half.

Converse chipped away at the margin in the second half, bringing Queens within five with the help of three-pointers by Jasmine Collier. It was a little too close for comfort for the home team.

A 16-2 run put the Royals back out in front by 19, 64-45, with 6:24 to play.

Converse brought the lead back down to 10 points with 2:14 to go, but in those last two minutes Queens connected on 13 of 15 free throws to go up by 21. Another three-pointer by Collier made the final score 85-67.

Around the glass, Queens pulled down 48 rebounds to Converse's 39.

During the contest Converse's Sydney Brown scored her 1000th career point.
